Privacy Policy

TomoMark is a native macOS app for keeping, reading and translating your own documents. TomoMark has no servers of its own, requires no account, and collects no personal data. This policy explains how your information is handled.

The short version

• We do not run any backend. TomoMark talks only to Apple and to the services you set up yourself.
• We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share your personal data.
• Your documents live in a library folder you choose, on your own Mac.
• Translation runs on your Mac by default. Nothing is sent to a cloud service until you enable one and agree to it.
• Your API keys and secrets are stored in the macOS Keychain on your device.
• There is no analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking in the app.

Information we collect

None. TomoMark does not have an account system and does not send your data to us. We have no analytics SDKs, no crash-reporting services, and no advertising. The developer of TomoMark never receives your documents, your translations, your credentials, or usage information.

Your documents

Documents you import are stored on your Mac, in a library folder you choose. By default a copy is made into that folder and your original file is never rewritten; you can also link a document in place, in which case TomoMark reads it where it already lives. Translations, layout data, highlights, annotations, reading positions, your wordbook and your glossaries are stored alongside them in the same folder. None of it is uploaded anywhere by TomoMark.

Translation and AI summaries

By default, translation runs entirely on your Mac using Apple's on-device translation framework, or Apple Intelligence on macOS 26. In that mode your text never leaves the machine.

If you choose to enable a cloud engine (for example DeepL, Google, Microsoft, Tencent, Baidu, Youdao, Alibaba, Volcano Engine, Amazon, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, or an aggregator), TomoMark tells you where text will be sent and asks you to agree before the first request. From then on the relevant paragraphs of the document are sent directly from your Mac to the provider you configured, using your own API key. There is no relay server in between, and you can revoke any destination later, individually or all at once. The handling of data you send to a cloud provider is governed by that provider's own terms and privacy policy. A local server you run yourself, such as Ollama or LM Studio, keeps the text on your own machine or network.

AI summaries work the same way but start from nothing: they need a language model, which Apple's on-device translation framework is not, so the feature is off until you set up an engine for it. Summaries have their own separate list of engines and their own separate consent, so enabling one for translation does not enable it here. Pointing that list at a model you run yourself, in Ollama or LM Studio, keeps summaries on your own machine too.

Word lookup, encyclopedias and journal details

Looking a word up queries only the dictionaries you have enabled. The macOS system dictionary and the offline ECDICT answer entirely on your device; Free Dictionary, Wiktionary, Youdao, Merriam-Webster and an AI dictionary are network services, and each one is disabled until you turn it on and agree. Encyclopedia entries come from Wikipedia, Wikidata, Moegirlpedia or Baidu Baike under the same rule. When one of these is used, the word or phrase you selected is sent to that service and nothing else.

Journal details are looked up by DOI or journal name against Crossref, OpenAlex and, if you supply your own key, easyScholar. Only the identifier is sent, never the contents of the document.

Credentials and secrets

API keys, access tokens, and secrets you enter for your engines are stored in the macOS Keychain on your device. They are used only to authenticate requests to the service they belong to and are never sent anywhere else. They are not transmitted to the developer.

File access

TomoMark runs in the App Sandbox. It reads the files you open or drop in, and it writes to the library folder and the export destinations you choose. Access to a folder you selected is remembered with a macOS security-scoped bookmark, so you are not asked for it again. TomoMark asks for no other system permissions: no screen recording, no microphone, no camera, no contacts, no location.

Purchases

TomoMark offers a 7-day free trial and a one-time purchase to unlock the app, handled entirely through Apple's StoreKit and the App Store. Apple processes the transaction; TomoMark does not receive or store your payment details. Purchase validation uses Apple-signed receipts on your device. Network connections

TomoMark makes network connections only to (1) the translation, summary, dictionary, encyclopedia and journal services you enable, in order to perform the actions you request, (2) the download of the optional offline ECDICT dictionary, if you start it, and (3) Apple, for App Store and in-app purchase functionality. It makes no other outbound connections. If you configure a proxy, those requests follow it.

Children's privacy

TomoMark is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
